Description

Piece # 94.5 "Sharper than Steel"
A Zoria's Creation. Krista DeSelms ©2010

Sooo this is a random piece I guess I only got like 2 pictures of I made last year and never got put up. I'm thinking it's around about the time of Halloween last 2010, it must have been one that sold quick because I have no recollection of having it very long or when it sold. Anyway, specs:

Snowflake Obsidian tumbled stone wrapped in square Argentium Sterling Silver.

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass that is made like manufactured glass by cooling very quickly in water. In this case the lava flows swiftly into the sea or other body of water and becomes a natural glass which can be polished and sharpened very finely. Obsidian has even been used in making surgical knives because of its ability to be sharpened to a point many times sharper than steel. Obsidian can be sharpened to a point as fine as 3 nanometers thick.

Snowflake Obsidian has gray to white splotches patterned throughout its black obsidian base color. Obsidian forms when lava cools quickly. When lava cools more slowly, crystals begin to form, giving the rock a more textured appearance. The crystals that appear as a 'snowflake' pattern in the mineral are called Cristobalite.

Argentium Sterling Silver is the highest quality of Sterling Silver available today and is highly tarnish resistant. Sterling Silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, Argentium is still the 92.5% silver but it replaces some of the copper with the element Germanium which gives it a higher tarnish resistance and less people are allergic to it than just normal Sterling Silver.

This piece is itself a commentary in contradiction (and I mean that in a very good way). The strong, bold feel of the heavier gauge wire contrasts with the soft curves and patterns of the stone. I like the way the stone seems to float in its wire cage, defying gravity and yet submitting to it at the same time. The silver suits obsidian perfectly, especially this snowflake variety. You've chosen a perfect way to display this piece, posing it on the sharp angular quartz crystals its lying on. As for the wirework, like all your pieces, it is nicely balanced, having just the right blend of soft sweeps and hard lines. The open bail and reverse sweep at the top are a nice finishing touch. I like this very much.
