Description

Piece # 127 "Pure Intentions"
A Zoria's Creation. Krista DeSelms ©2012

This is a very beautiful piece of Rose Quartz I acquired in a wrap for cabs trade.

Rose Quartz wrapped in square Argentium Sterling Silver.

Pure quartz, traditionally called rock crystal (sometimes called clear quartz), is colorless and transparent (clear) or translucent. Quartz is a crystal Common colored varieties include citrine, rose quartz, amethyst, smoky quartz, milky quartz, and others. Quartz has a Trigonal crystal structure, containing four axes, three of which intersect to form a plane, intersected by the fourth. Impurities or disruptions during the formation process can form crystals that contain encrustations and or phantom crystals. Crystals can also form hexagonal prisms, twinning, or double terminations. They can show up in Geodes in any or all of the Quartz forms.

Rose Quartz is one of the more desirable varieties of quartz. The pink can range from almost clear to close to rose red and some African verities border on lavender. The color seems to be caused by iron and titanium impurities. However the color of rose quartz has been said to be due to a number of different minor impurities present in the rose quartz including titanium, manganese and even colloidal gold.

Argentium Sterling Silver is the highest quality of Sterling Silver available today and is highly tarnish resistant. Sterling Silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Argentium is actually 93% silver with the remaining 7% a mixture of Copper and the element Germanium which gives it a higher tarnish resistance and less people are allergic to it than normal Sterling Silver.

Yes, I do custom work.

I have to preface my critique by saying I'm a huge geology and rock & mineral nerd. I'll walk into a mineral exhibit and stand there like a toddler transfixed by a television set. Naturally, this rose quartz pendant caught my eye as it is a rare strain of quartz.

I've seen some incredible work with wire wrapping and wire framing for jewelry, and I really love your choice of wire here. I feel that gold, copper, or a black wire would have detracted from the piece and really diminished the overall impact. The silver chosen is the highest quality, which makes this wire somewhat softer than other silvers. Still, aren't Pure Intentions usually of the softer nature?

Back to the wire: I love this rectangular, angular wire! So many pendants-- actually, TOO many pendants use the same gauge in the same standard colors, in the same round shape. It is incredibly refreshing to see this extra flair on the piece.

The shape of the wire wrapping is incredibly eye-catching and aesthetically pleasing. I'm especially drawn to the single curl across the top of the rose quartz, as it reminds me of a woman's bangs and adds an anthropomorphic quality.

Honestly, I could go on and on and on about this work, so I'll try to get to the one thing I could think of that could use improvement. If you look at the bottom half of this pendant, you'll notice that the trapezoids on the left and right are uneven in height. To be fair, this isn't an awful mistake; so much of this pendant has a beautiful asymmetry to it. Still, the eyes are attracted to symmetry, and I feel like the two trapezoids on the sides could be symmetrical with minimal impact to the design. That's really all the constructive criticism I have to offer. This is a gorgeous pendant, and anybody would stand right next to me, drooling over its splendid design.
